Participation Requirement:
    Participants in Academy surgical skills programs must have completed or be currently enrolled in a residency program accredited by either the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Surgeons from outside of the United States are required to have similar residency program credentials.

Explore current approaches to performing primary and revision hip arthroplasty
This intensive surgical skills course reviews preoperative planning for both primary and revision total hip arthroplasty, as well as management techniques for post-operative complications including dislocation, infections, fracture or osteolysis. The unique lab setting allows participants to practice the latest techniques for managing difficult femoral and acetabular revision surgery.

Course highlights include:

  • Matching patient characteristics with implant choices and bearing options
  • Discussion of anterior approach
  • Current recommendations for the patient with metal/metal bearings
  • Workup of the problematic hip replacement

  • At the conclusion of this course or webinar, learners should be able to:

    • Preoperative planning for primary total hip arthroplasty cases; including approach, bearing options, and the role of modern resurfacing
    • Perform a primary THR through an extensile surgical approach which could be expanded in a revision setting
    • Identify the various complications and management options following total hip arthroplasty including fracture, dislocation, periprosthetic osteolysis and infection.
    • Formulate strategies for managing bone loss and options for reconstructing the deficient acetabulum and/or femur

    Request for a refund must be received in writing in the Academy Office (AAOS, 6300 North River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018-4262) by 11/07/2013. In all instances a cancellation fee will be charged. Beyond these dates, no monetary refunds will be issued. Instead, the tuition amount, less cancellation fee, will be credited toward another AAOS course within one year.

    The Academy reserves the right to cancel a course thirty (30) days prior to the course date. Any person who has registered for the course will be notified by email at the address noted in the AAOS member database. A telephone call will also be made to each registrant for whom a number is available. Persons whose registration is received after a course is cancelled will be notified by telephone and email. Registration fees will be refunded in full. However, other costs incurred by the registrant, such as airline or hotel penalties are the responsibility of the registrant.
